Recovery emails are part of your campaigns. You can add as many emails to your recovery campaigns as you'd like -- we recommend 3 recovery emails per campaign, as our automatically-generated emails illustrate.

Create Recovery Emails

You can create new recovery emails in a couple places.

1/ From your campaigns list, click the "+" shortcode to add a new recovery email to that campaign.

2/ While viewing a campaign, click the "+ New Email" button in the top right.

This will let you edit your new email settings and content.

Edit Recovery Email

While editing a new or existing recovery email, you'll be able to both edit the email settings and content. Each email has a few settings you can configure:

  • From name: The "From" name for the email; this is what customers will see as the sender when they receive a recovery email.
  • From email: The "From" email address for the email; this si what customers will see as the sending email when they receive a recovery email.
  • BCC email: (Optional) an email address to CC on these emails if desired.
  • Subject: The subject for the recovery email
  • Sending behavior: Whether to send the email automatically or not; not sending automatically basically allows you to keep this email as a "draft" until you're ready to start sending it.
  • Delay time: How long after the cart has been abandoned to wait before this email is sent. A cart isn't considered "abandoned" until the cart been idle for at least 15 minutes (no changes to items in the cart), and you must wait at least 15 minutes after this period before sending a recovery email. We recommend a delay time of an hour or more on your first email.

The email also has a content editor that lets you insert content, add personalization, and modify HTML (for advanced usage). We are also happy to help you customize the design of these recovery emails as we improve the editing experience! Just get in touch with our team and we'd be glad to assist 😊

When editing emails, you can change the message for the customer in the "HTML" tab. The "Plain text" email will automatically be generated from the HTML version, or you can choose to edit it manually.

Personalizing Recovery Emails

You can use merge tags to personalize your recovery email content, including customer name or cart content.

Customer tags

  • {{ customer.first_name }} -- inserts the customer's first name. You can set a default or fallback as well if the first name is unknown using {{ customer.first_name | default: "friend" }}
  • {{ customer.last_name }} -- inserts the customer's last name. You can set a default or fallback as well if the last name is unknown using {{ customer.first_name | default: "friend" }}
  • {{ customer.email }} -- inserts the customer's email address

Order tags

  • {{ order.total_price }} -- inserts the total price for the abandoned order
  • {{ order.checkout_url }} -- inserts the URL to re-build the cart and complete checkout (the customer lands on the checkout page with the cart re-filled).

Line item tags

Line item tags can be used while looping order line items.

  • {{ line_item.title }} -- inserts the title for the line item, such as the product name
  • {{ line_item.price }} -- inserts the unit price for the line item
  • {{ line_item.line_price }}  -- inserts the line price for the line item; will be the unit price times the quantity
  • {{ line_item.quantity }}  -- inserts the quantity in the cart for the line item
  • {{ line_item.sku }}  -- inserts the SKU for the line item
  • {{ line_item.image_url }}  -- inserts the URL for the line item's image / product image. Can be used like this:`
<img src="{{ line_item.image_url }}" />

Loop tags

There are also advanced tags that will let you create loops if desired. (For developers)

  • {{ order.line_items }} -- this gives you all order items. You can loop through them using something like this:
{% for line_items in order.line_items %}
// what to do for each line item, such as display the item name
{% endfor %}

Not a developer? That's okay too! If you want to customize how line items are shown in your emails, our customer service team would be happy to help you get this set up.

Previewing Recovery Emails

Before activating an email for automatic sending, you can preview it or send a test email to review the email content (sample content will be used for merge tags).

To preview an email, you can click on the "Preview" tab. This will render a preview of your recovery email for you to review with dummy content.

To test your email, you can send a test email to yourself. Go to the "Send test email" tab, then enter the email address you'd like to send the test email to. Click "Send", and a test email will be sent with some dummy content for this recover email.

Don't forget to set your email to "Send automatically" once you're happy with the way it looks! If you need some help getting your recovery email set up or edited, please let us know and we'd be happy to help get it set up.
