Importing contact lists to Omnisend

Great job on taking care of the first few migration steps! The basic email capture features are now in place so we can spend some time on the principal migration step: Importing your contact lists

❗ Please review this entire resource before starting this process.

  1. Export contacts from Jilt

  2. Prepare your file

  3. Import contacts to Omnisend

1. Export contacts from Jilt:

First, we'll want to export all of your contacts that are in Jilt.

  1. Login to your Jilt account

  2. Go to Contacts

  3. Bulk select your contacts

  4. Click Actions > Export contacts

  5. Choose All contacts from the modal

  6. Select Start export

A link to download the export file will be sent to your email address when it's ready. Once you've downloaded the file, unzip the package. It should contain up to five CSV files:

  • All-contacts. This file includes the entire list of contacts that were exported and is included in every contact export that's processed by Jilt.

  • Subscribed. This list includes all contacts that have explicitly opted-in to receive marketing emails from your store.

  • Unsubscribed. This list includes all contacts that have opted out of your email marketing. The action is typically completed by clicking the unsubscribe link in an email.

  • Non-subscribed. This list includes all contacts that have neither opted-in or opted-out of your email marketing.

  • Suppressed. This list includes all contacts that have the suppressed status in Jilt (read more on statuses here). Contacts move to this status when their email address hard bounces, they mark one of your emails as spam, or they unsubscribe from your emails.

Note: The export file includes the CSVs for which you have matching contacts. We won't generate a CSV if there are no contacts in one of the opt-in or status lists.

2. Prepare your file

Before importing your CSV file, be sure to prepare your file according to these specifications:

  1. Phone numbers must be in International format (+15551234567) and formatted as “text” in Excel.

  2. Timestamps must be in ISO 8601 format - change the date format in Excel.

3. Import contacts to Omnisend:

Follow these steps:

Step 2: Map properties

  • Only 6 properties will have matching properties in Omnisend (email, first name, last name, phone, opt-in at, unsubscribed at). See the chart below.

  • You can create custom fields if you want or need to import additional fields.

  • Learn more about how Omnisend uses Tags vs. Custom properties to see which option will be right for your store.

Map column labels to contact information.

At a minimum, you'll want to keep the six default mappings shown in the table below:

Omnisend properties with the "---" entry will require adding a custom property. To map a custom property, type the name you want to use as a custom property and hit enter. You can later segment your audience by Custom property.

Step 3: Organize contacts

  • Decide what to do with contacts missing email or SMS opt-in status.

  • You can also add Omnisend tags to all contacts in the file at this point in the process.

⚠️ Note: If you want to use Omnisend tags, create a separate import for each tag containing the email addresses associated with that tag. At minimum, you can upload a file containing the email address column only since assigning tags at this step will apply to all contacts in the import.

Step 4: Review

In this step, you'll have a chance to review your import. Make sure you approve, then:

  • Select Import.

When you're done, your imported contacts will appear on the Audience > Imports page in your Omnisend account. 🙌
