Make sure to complete the previous steps in our migration guide: Integrate your store with Klaviyo.

Great job on taking care of the first few migration steps! The basic email capture features are now in place so we can spend some time on the principal migration step: importing your existing contacts.

Export your contacts from Jilt

First, we'll want to export all of your contacts that are in Jilt.

  1. From your Jilt account, go to Contacts

  2. Bulk select your contacts

  3. Click Actions > Export contacts

A link to download the export file will be sent to your email address when it's ready. Once you've downloaded the file, unzip the package. It will contain up to five CSV files:

  • All-contacts. This file includes the entire list of contacts that were exported and is included in every contact export that's processed by Jilt.

  • Subscribed. This list includes all contacts that have explicitly opted-in to receive marketing emails from your store.

  • Unsubscribed. This list includes all contacts that have opted out of your email marketing. The action is typically completed by clicking the unsubscribe link in an email.

  • Non-subscribed. This list includes all contacts that have neither opted-in or opted-out of your email marketing.

  • Suppressed. This list includes all contacts that have the suppressed status in Jilt (read more on statuses here). Contacts move to this status when their email address hard bounces, they mark one of your emails as spam, or they unsubscribe from your emails.

Note: The export file includes the CSVs for which you have matching contacts. We won't generate a CSV if there are no contacts in one of the opt-in or status lists.

Import contacts into Klaviyo

  • Log into your Klaviyo account

  • Open the Lists & Segments dashboard

  • Click Create List / Segment

  • Choose the List option

Create a list

  1. Give your list a name. We recommend using a name similar to the CSV file name you're planning to import.

  2. (Optional) Create a new tag to add to all of the contacts. Using a tag like "Jilt import" may be useful to keep track of the migrated contacts.

  3. Click Create List.

Upload contacts

Now that the list has been created, click Upload Contacts.

On the upload screen you can either drag and drop your file in the specified area, or select it from your computer.

⚠️ Klaviyo recommends limiting your import to contacts that have explicitly opted-in to receive marketing from you. These contacts are included in the Subscribed.csv file that was provided in Jilt's export package.

Import review

The import review screen will load where you can review the field mapping and make changes as necessary.

At a minimum, you'll want to keep all of the default mappings as per the below table. We also recommend mapping the Tags JSON and Opt-in date fields as noted.

Mapping custom fields

Klaviyo properties with the "---" entry in the above table require adding a custom field. To create a custom field, click on the Unmapped dropdown and type the new field name. Then click the Create option to add the custom field.

Select the new field label and choose the appropriate data type on the far right of the screen.

⚠️ The Tags JSON field should use the List type so each tag entry is available for segmentation purposes.

Fields that you don't wish to import should have the checkmark removed next to their entry.

Once you've finished mapping columns select the Import Review button. A confirmation screen will appear -- make sure to review the selections. Click Start Import once you're ready to import the list.
